The Atlantic Dubai restaurant is our latest project.
The Atlantic Dubai
Client: atlantic group | completion: January 2017
Our latest project is The Atlantic Dubai restaurant located in the Souk Al Bahar, Downtown Dubai, with spectacular views over The Dubai Fountain, Dubai Opera House and Burj Khalifa. This is the first franchise of the original seafood restaurant of the Atlantic Group from Melbourne with acclaimed chef, Donovan Cooke. The venue opened in January 2017 and is run by Solutions Leisure Group, the leading nightlife and entertainment group in the Middle East.
The interior is inspired by the magnetic and wild beauty of the Australian coastline where amazing shades of emerald green water interplay with sand, stone, and massive and raw cliffs, creating an unforgettable place outside time. The aim was to translate this imagery into a space.
We take the customer through a journey, applying the brand’s claim from ‘’Ocean to Plate” by building up layers of ocean-inspired storytelling. The bar area is inspired by the industrial and rough vibe of fish harbours and markets, including the hustle and bustle of cocktail stations and the theatre of an open kitchen. The main central dining area calms the mood down to a relaxed beach-like atmosphere. From here, one enters the terrace with the iconic view over the blue waters of the fountains.
The design process centered on finding a solution for the main obstruction: four massive structural columns located exactly in the middle of the desired open space. We decided to elevate them to objet d'art: conceptual ocean emeralds which give a sense of illusion and depth. By cladding the columns with gradient ombre glass, we transformed the structures into sculptures.
Weathered timber flooring in a central, stylized chevron pattern is framed by simple boardwalks running along the surrounding raw sand rock walls. A specialized artisan-distressed finish is applied to make these walls look like they have been here for hundreds of years and to give the feeling of solitude and sanctuary. All this creates a perfect backdrop for the emerald columns and soft seating, upholstered in sun-burnt shades.
The beach pebble theme repeats in warm stone finishes throughout the interior: a monolithic green terrazzo bar counter, elegant table tops, and in situ terrazzo and marble mosaic flooring in the bar area.
As a solution to the restriction on public display of alcohol, the bottles are hidden behind frosted metal wired glass and create an intriguing backlit feature in the back bar. Detailed metalwork sharpens the industrial feel. Circular shapes of the bar shelving frame echo throughout in the waiters’ station drums, round mirrors, chandelier globe shades, and solar eclipse wall lamps.
Probably the most original and unique design elements in the space are the windbreak screens embracing the banquette seating. Sailcloth woven through the bent rattan construction brings softness and lightness.
We were set on designing custom-made decorative lighting from the beginning. We designed the bar pendants with smart rope chain details and metal tube shades. The chandelier above the main dining area features milk glass globe shades in various surface finishes, including dots and swirls. It is a very complex detail, noticeable only upon a closer look.
In pursuance of purity and refinement, we focused on sensual nuances through choice of colours, tones, temperature, and surfaces. The contrasts between soft and warm surfaces, with cool and glossy finishes, suggest the contrast between sand and water.
The interior is completely custom-made. We also conceptualized the uniforms and tableware. The layout proves to be functional and the interior is easily maintained on a daily basis. Carefully selected finishes, a nuanced colour palette, and organic simplicity of form result in an aesthetically beautiful and harmonious space. Arrangement of classic and contemporary elements creates an eclectic, timeless style and a relaxed ambiance.
All this is designed to capture the imagination and allow the customers to discover the space anew, each time they return. We created an inviting backdrop for the main actor: the delicious seafood dishes.
